Emmy has tried not to think about Owen– her childhood friend– since she confessed her true feelings for him the day he was jilted at the altar.

Instead, she’s devoted herself to her bookstore and her podcast, where she shares romantic advice from the greatest love stories she knows.

But when Emmy’s house catches on fire, who comes to her rescue but the town’s new fireman– and also the boy she’s made herself forget all these years?

When sparks start flying, Emmy has to decide if she’s ready to face a non-fictional romance of her own.

⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5/5 stars)

POV: you’re a book-obsessed clean romcom reader scrolling on Instagram, and this adorable cover halts the doom-scroll. Because… I mean, LOOK AT THAT COVER!!!

I was absolutely and totally sold on this book before I’d even read the plot. And, to be honest, the plot was– in my humble opinion– the weakest part of this book. But, I still had a terrific time trying to get our two main characters together, and giggling over all of their great interactions. So many adorable moments that made me grin as I read this story.

Truly, if you just want a romcom that reads like a 90s romcom movie– but without all the content– this one is for you. All of the references to other books made me feel like it was a very relatable story, and just the way things played out… I really enjoyed it.

My main confusion while reading this story was just what past history they had, and the whole narrative of how and when things happened in their relationship prior to the beginning of the book. I think a prologue that could sort of catch us up before diving into the story would have definitely helped me with that.

I will say I enjoyed both of our main characters. I preferred Emmy– probably because she was a very relatable character– but I also thought Owen was pretty cool. A dyslexic firefighter is always going to make for a great rom-com hero, in my humble opinion. I wasn’t exactly sure why everyone hated him, but that’s okay. I was glad he was seen as a hero after saving Emmy.

One of the main surprises for me in this book is that I actually liked our main couple a whole lot more than our side characters. Usually, in these sorts of stories with a lot of small-town charm, I end up actually liking the supporting characters more, but not this time.

Except Reagan.

She was awesome. End of story.

A lot of other side characters were really annoying to me… especially his sister, which really surprised me. I’m usually a really big fan of sister side characters. However, that’s okay.

And don’t even get me started on his ex-fiancee.

But, overall, this book was just a really fun read. I think there should be a lot more romcoms like this out there. I would definitely love to read them, and enjoy them as I did this one. Plus, it’s an adorable cover (I may have not even remembered that it’d been previously published under another cover, whoops!).

There was some minor language throughout (9x “crap”, 7x “screwed-up”, etc.), and also implying an “R-rated” word. There are a couple of mentions of sleeping with someone (nothing actually happens), as well as brief alcohol consumption, fighting and punching, and also an on-page panic attack from our main girl. Overall, I would say it was very sweet and clean, and I appreciated the romance content being sweet (and the jokes about some open-door books). I would say any adult reader who wanted a clean romance. I don’t remember any explicitly Christian content– but there were mentions of church.

This fun romcom is available for free through Kindle Unlimited, and I would greatly recommend it if you’re looking for a fall romcom that’s more focused on the romcom than the autumnal elements. I really enjoyed it, and would definitely say it’s my new favorite by this author, and I’m excited to read more books by her in the future.

Welcome to my little corner of this great big world wide web– which feels a little scary to type out. Since I’m here, that means I am not reading, which is actually pretty crazy. Now that we’ve acknowledged that anomaly, however, I will go back to reading. Feel free to join me as we discover a world of books!
