Sophia has run away from her past of servitude, searching for a new beginning. She finds one among the goats of a noble family in the country.
When one of the sons in the noble family (Caspian) returns from working as a guard in the capital, he meets Sophia, and is instantly intrigued by this ‘goat girl’.
But when obstacles rise up between them, can Sophia and Caspian rise above the challenges and find their own happily-ever-after… or will it simply be a once upon a time?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)
This was so cute. Honestly, it was adorable in every sense of the word. And this cover… I have no words. It is the cutest thing. I honestly had no idea how much I would love this book. I heard Lindsey from BFCG talking about it, and I really wanted to give it a try, especially since I’ve recently been looking for a Snow White story that I actually like. (Easier said than done.)
Honestly, I have read a few different Snow White retellings and watched a couple of movies, and I just have never been a fan. This changed that, though. I am now very excited to say that I have a new favorite Snow White story, and this is it. So, yes, I am so excited to share more about this story with you!
The plot was excellent. I really liked the mixture we had of character interactions and plot, and it made me really get into the story. I was definitely intrigued by the premise, but it was the cozy feelings that made me fall in love. 😍
Now, Sophia and Caspian. Usually in a romance like this, I find myself favoring one of them over the other, but not this time. In this story, I liked them both a lot, and I thought they worked really well together. One of the things that impressed me so much was the banter and the way they would converse about things. I really like how they didn’t (usually) jump to assumptions, and they talked out trouble as they came to it.
There was also a whole ton of cute banter– he’s such a perfectionist and can’t stand anything being dirty, but she spends her time with baby goats. (Oh, my goodness, the baby goats were so precious! I was absolutely in love!!! Although, I’ve always really loved baby goats, so… you know.) Which means they’re pretty much opposites in standards of cleanliness, and he got so upset when the goats would do something messy. It made me smirk a lot.
The side characters in this story were pretty great. I really enjoyed them, especially the strong friend group that was very supportive and protective, even though they hadn’t known each other for that long. (Oh, and let me just say, the cat café? I want to go there so badly!)
As far as the retelling elements themselves, I felt like they were lighter for much of the book, which is probably why we had time for so many other amazing things, and that really got me invested in the characters instead of a story that I’ve heard a lot, but never loved. Also, the apple bit? That was great, too.
Content-wise, this was very clean, in my opinion. Sophia was abused by her employer before the events of the book, and there is some fighting/kidnapping, but nothing too much. The romance is very clean, sweet, and respectful. I would say this would be a fine read for teens and adults.
So, yes! I really enjoyed this one, and I would highly recommend it! This has become a new favorite for me, and I cannot wait to continue on with the series. I highly recommend trying this book, even if you aren’t usually a fan of the Snow White story. This one was really good, and gives you lots of cozy, autumnal feels. I kind of imagined it playing out like this beautiful animated movie that used the style of drawing on the cover, and it was gorgeous. I would totally watch that movie.
Now, I get to move on to my favorite part of any review (but especially when it’s a five star story)…
