Once there were four children whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy.”

Thus begins this powerful tale of adventure, magic, and sacrifice. This story not only sweeps you through the wardrobe and into a world of talking beasts and never-ending winter, but into a soul-stirring voyage that you can carry with you for the rest of your life.

This book is a true classic, and one of my all-time favorite books. I adore the story, the characters, and the general aesthetic, and I would highly recommend everyone reading it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)

I feel almost a little silly writing this review. I mean… it’s Narnia! I think just about everyone has either a) read it; b) decided not to read it; or c) considered reading it but never gotten around to actually doing it.

However, because this book is an all-time favorite, it deserves a spot on this blog, and so, today, I am giving it one. Because, this book… this book! It’s an amazing story with parallels to Christianity, relatable characters that make you root for them the entire way, and a writing style that makes me want to curl up in a fuzzy blanket and bask in the glow of this delightful story.

Because, really, isn’t that what fuzzy blankets are made for?

So, I will attempt to offer a summary of the plot, however, I have a feeling that you all know the story already. Anyway, for anyone who doesn’t know, this charming book follows four children who are sent to the countryside during World War II. While staying at the house of an elderly professor, they discover a wardrobe that can transport them to another world: Narnia. Once there, they discover the land has been cursed by an evil Witch, and that they just might be the key to her undoing.

Ahh… this story is so good! I love each and every one of the characters (except the ones I don’t love. You know what I mean). Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are fantastically written and feel very real. The Professor makes me smile whenever he begins to speak. I love Mr. Tumnus, the Beavers, and, of course, Aslan.

(I do not have words to describe how much I love Aslan. Therefore, I shall not attempt to. 🦁)

Every bit of this story is so incredible. Each scene plays out like I can see it in front of me– not so much like a movie as something I can participate in. I do not watch them as they trek through the snowy lands of Narnia… I trek with them. And that is a rare quality in any book.

The religious parallel in this book is unrivaled. The depth that Lewis explains Christianity at, and the subtle way the story plays out… it’s absolutely incredible, and I think every Christian writer should read this book at least once, because it so beautifully illustrated how powerful a tool the written word can be in pointing the people around us to the Lord.

As far as content in this book goes, there is some magic, which I know can be a very sensitive topic for families, however, the Witch is totally awful, and we make no question of this. Aslan is the symbol for good, and while he does use some magic, it’s described as not being witchcraft, if that makes sense. (I hope I’m explaining this somewhat well.) I would say this is a fine middle-grade read, and that families could enjoy this story as a read-aloud.

This book is the first in a seven-book series, although one of the books takes place before the events of this story. However, I would highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend reading this book first. Please.

All in all, this story is amazing. I love it, and it has a very dear place in my heart. If you and your family enjoy this book, Disney did make a movie adaptation of it, although I consider it inferior to the book, and I would definitely recommend reading this before watching the movie.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this review, and now, I am very excited to share my…

Welcome to my little corner of this great big world wide web– which feels a little scary to type out. Since I’m here, that means I am not reading, which is actually pretty crazy. Now that we’ve acknowledged that anomaly, however, I will go back to reading. Feel free to join me as we discover a world of books!
